AUSTIN, TEXAS — ThoroughFare will host a Mueller neighborhood block party Wednesday, May 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. at 1905 Aldrich St., bringing kid-friendly activities and tastings to the Aldrich Street retail strip. The free event includes face painting, bread and cookie tastings, merch giveaways and pop-ups with partners like Toy Joy, Veracruz All Natural and Lick Ice Cream. It is also a handy way for nearby households to test-drive a new everyday stop, as previously reported in our coverage of ThoroughFare’s opening on Aldrich Street.

The block party fits Mueller’s usual rhythm of short outings that combine errands, a snack and a little time outside, as our earlier story on the neighborhood’s walkable routine noted in Mueller Today. It also lands ahead of other food-heavy Mueller meetups, including the Texas Farmers’ Market at Mueller at Branch Park Pavilion later in June, which we have covered as a recurring grocery-and-neighbors routine. Expect a lively but casual feel, with vendors offering samples and families able to circle through activities without committing to a sit-down meal.

Elsewhere in Austin, this same stretch of spring food news comes with some whiplash. Desert Door Distillery in Driftwood has faced reports of sudden disruption, including canceled tours and uncertainty for vendors who rely on weekend traffic, according to Hoodline. Senza Maeso’s tasting room in San Marcos is set to close after May 31, and the owners acknowledged the strain directly: "This is not where we wanted to be," wrote the owners in a frank Instagram post.

The good-news counterpoint is closer to home in Mueller. Empowered Café reopened May 10 at 1701 Simond Ave., Unit 104, with a for-profit model built around employing and training adults with Down syndrome, according to FOX 7 Austin. Its comeback lands in a city where restaurant churn has stayed high, especially for small independents facing rent and staffing pressures, according to Houston Chronicle and Express-News. If you have been meaning to plug into what is new, and support what is sticking around, May 21 on Aldrich Street is an easy place to start.
