AUSTIN, TEXAS — Austin police identified Nicholas Zarate, 47, as the victim in a fatal shooting reported Sunday evening at 4700 Loyola Lane in East Austin near Mueller. Officers responded to a disturbance call at about 5:07 p.m., arrived around 5:10 p.m., and found Zarate on the ground with injuries described as incompatible with life. He was pronounced dead at 5:28 p.m., and detectives said the suspect fled on foot.
Police have not released a suspect description or announced any arrests, and investigators said no security camera footage is currently available. The case remains open, and anyone with information is asked to call Austin Police at 512-974-TIPS. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Capital Area Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477 or online, and a reward of up to $1,000 may be offered for information leading to an arrest.
No additional safety advisory was issued, but police urged anyone who saw the disturbance or a person running from the area to report what they know. The killing was Austin’s 16th homicide of 2026.
Citywide context shows homicides fell in 2025, to 55 from 66 in 2024, and overall crime moved closer to pre-2020 levels, according to KUT News. Austin police have also cited a 100% homicide clearance rate in 2023, when all 75 cases were cleared, according to City of Austin.
The homicide investigation comes as East Austin has also been part of broader prevention work, including violence-intervention programs supported in 2025, according to Community Impact, and safety-by-design projects like lighting and visibility changes at Givens Park, according to Austin Monitor. Separate efforts to coordinate violent-crime casework between police and prosecutors have also been a recent focus, according to KUT News.
In Mueller, recent public-safety attention has included targeted enforcement for property offenses in the retail corridor, with 11 arrests made during an April 8 shoplifting operation, as previously reported in this Mueller Today report.
