Incident Overview

Austin Police Department is on the hunt for a porch pirate responsible for stealing crucial medical supplies intended for a child with special needs in the Mueller neighborhood. The theft occurred on June 15, around 1:15 p.m., at a residence located in the 2500 block of Zach Scott Street.

Description of Suspect

The suspect, described as a young Hispanic man wearing a yellow Chicago Bulls hat, white shirt, black basketball shorts, and pink bracelets, was caught on camera swiping two packages just 45 minutes after they were delivered. The perpetrator bears distinguishing tattoos: a scripture on his inner left wrist and forearm and another on his right arm's elbow ditch.

Impact on the Family

Renee, the mother of the affected three-and-a-half-year-old, who requested her last name be withheld for privacy reasons, explained the urgency of the stolen supplies. "There was a sense of violation, a level of frustration, because this is not just a nuisance for us. How am I going to feed my kid in 48 hours without the necessary supplies?" she lamented. The packages contained feeding bags, formula, and syringes essential for her son's daily health regimen, as he suffers from a condition impacting his mobility and digestion.

Community and Personal Response

Fortunately, Renee was able to secure replacements with assistance from the supply company, which generously did not charge for the stolen items. She expressed gratitude for their understanding but remains troubled by the incident. "This person has no idea. My guess is that they just thought they were stealing average Joe boxes off of someone's front porch. In our case, these are actually vital for our kid to have food in him and to live his life," Renee said.

Porch piracy is a significant issue for the Mueller community. Neighbors were expected to retrieve the packages but were thwarted by the theft. Renee voices concern for families who might not have the means to replace stolen items swiftly. "I feel for those families and realize that we're in a privileged position to have the time to even address this or to have the extra cash to pay to try to get what we need covered until we can get a replacement," she said.

Message to the Suspect

Sharing her thoughts on the porch pirate, Renee adopts a compassionate stance. "As for her message to the suspect, 'I would like to meet them and just be like, can I hear your story? What led you to these choices that you are currently making?' As a follower of Jesus, I forgive them, that's a given, but I am curious as to what led them to that," she reflected.

Call for Information
